The joke lands because everyone in the room already knows it is true. He has spent four decades answering to somebody, and the day the badge goes back is the day the schedule gets handed to someone else entirely. It is the shirt he wears to the party and then keeps wearing on Saturdays, which is more than most retirement gifts manage.

Underneath the print it is a proper tee rather than a novelty one. Gildan Soft-style, ring-spun cotton, knit in one piece so there are no side seams digging in, twill tape across the shoulders to stop the back stretching out, and a ribbed collar that holds its shape through the wash. The print is direct-to-garment, so it sits in the fabric and stays soft instead of sitting on top like a plastic patch.

1. This is a unisex classic fit, cut straight rather than tapered.
2. Measure a shirt he already likes flat across the chest, then match that number to the width column below.

Two Things Worth Knowing

• The White option can read slightly off-white rather than bright white. That is the fabric, not the print.
• The Natural color uses unprocessed cotton, so you will see small black flecks through the fabric. That is normal and part of the look.
