One honest footnote: history has a competing claim. An Atlanta man named Michael Goldgar also campaigned in the 1970s for a grandparents holiday, funding trips to Washington himself. McQuade's campaign is the one most strongly tied to the federal designation, but both worked toward the same idea.
Two small traditions came with the holiday: the forget-me-not is its official flower, and it is a day for doing, not just card-giving. It is not a federal holiday, so schools, banks, and offices stay open. It is simply a Sunday set aside on purpose.
